THE BURNING MOUTH AND TONGUE SYNDROME

Also known as glossopyrosis, burning mouth or tongue syndrome affects 1-5% of the population. Its onset can be acute or gradual, it can be exacerbated by local (in the mouth) or systemic causes (medication, gastro-oesophageal reflux, changes in blood tests, depression, autoimmune diseases) and it causes great concern in those with symptoms.

How is it manifest?
  • Burning tongue/mouth
  • Tongue/mouth pain or discomfort
  • "Corked” tongue
  • Dry mouth
  • Constant metallic or bitter taste
