ACUTE ORAL CANDIDIASIS

ACUTE ORAL CANDIDIASIS OR ORAL THRUSH

Also known as "Oral Thrush", Acute Oral Candidiasis, is an infection caused by a fungus: Candida albicans.

This fungus usually resides in our mouth in harmony with us. However, in some situations it can become a problem.

The most frequent situations that lead to a Candida infection are:

Effect of a medication (for example an inhaled corticosteroid for asthma)

Effect of an antibiotic that we are taking for another reason

Low immunity

This condition is mainly manifest in two ways:

1- White pseudomembranes, which detach from the oral mucosa

2- Erythema (redness) of the oral mucosa, associated with pain and burning

It must be diagnosed and treated, to prevent it from spreading to the throat and oesophagus, and prevent it from becoming a chronic infection of the mouth.
